Renault is set to increase the range of new-generation Duster models in India by adding a less expensive automatic option, according to a report by Autocar India. This strategy aims to fill the existing price gap between automatic and manual models while catering to the rising demand for easier-to-use drivetrains in the mid-size SUV market. The new Renault Duster was introduced in March at a starting price of Rs 10.49 lakh (ex-showroom), making a significant impact in the very competitive mid-size SUV sector. It has already ranked among the top 10 most popular SUVs in its category. Furthermore, Renault plans to launch a strong hybrid version later this year, and reservations for it have already sold out for 2026.
Currently, the Duster comes with two turbo-petrol engine options. The 1.0-litre engine is only available with a 6-speed manual gearbox, while the more powerful 1.3-litre engine can be paired with both a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT) that features an e-shifter. The base 'Authentic' variant starts at Rs 10.49 lakh, whereas the premium 1.0-litre manual in the 'Techno' trim goes up to Rs 13.49 lakh. Presently, automatic models are only available from the 'Evolution' trim and above, beginning at Rs 14.49 lakh. This results in a significant price difference between the manual and automatic options, making it harder for some customers to access. Although specific details have not been released, there are several potential directions Renault could take. They might offer an automatic transmission with the 1.0-litre engine, or introduce a more affordable version of the 1.3-litre automatic by placing it in a lower trim like 'Authentic'.
Adding a lower-priced automatic version could help Renault attract more buyers to the Duster, particularly in city areas where the demand for automatic SUVs is rising. Expanding the powertrain and model options will likely enhance the vehicle's competitiveness ahead of the forthcoming hybrid model launch.
