Gujarat's Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi took his oath as Deputy Chief Minister of the state on Friday. This happened during a ceremony where Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel added new members to his cabinet at the Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre in Gandhinagar. Other individuals who were sworn in include Swaroopji Thakor, Pravenkumar Mali, Rushikesh Patel, Darshna Waghela, Kunvarji Bavaliya, Rivaba Jadeja, Arjun Modhwadia, Parshottam Solanki, Jitendra Waghani, Praful Pansheriya, and Kanubhai Desai, according to a list provided by the Gujarat BJP. The day before this cabinet expansion, all 16 ministers, except for Chief Minister Patel, turned in their resignations. A source from the BJP told news agency PTI, “The party has accepted the resignations of all 16 ministers. Everyone has resigned except Chief Minister Patel.”

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Patel visited Governor Acharya Devvrat to get permission for the oath-taking ceremony of his new cabinet. During their meeting at Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar, the Chief Minister also updated the Governor about the current state of the Gujarat cabinet. The state government had already announced that Patel would expand his cabinet on Friday. The Council of Ministers in Gujarat previously consisted of 17 members, including Chief Minister Patel. Out of these, eight were of cabinet rank and the others served as Ministers of State (MoS). In a state assembly of 182 members, Gujarat can have a total of 27 ministers, which is 15 percent of the assembly's total members. Earlier this month, MoS Jagdish Vishwakarma took over as the new president of the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, replacing Union minister CR Paatil. Bhupendra Patel began his second term as Chief Minister on December 12, 2022.
