A Hampton University professor has been slapped with drug charges for distributing the prohibited substance to three Newport News Jail inmates. The three inmates have also been charged for possessing drugs.

The jail officials came across letters which had marijuana and heroin inside during routine screening.

Kathleen Carey, Newport News sheriff's spokeswoman, said that the smuggling of drugs was intercepted during routine screening of the mails this month. The mails, which were addressed to the three Newport News inmates, would arrive on consecutive days.

The intercepted mails contained marijuana, tobacco and rolling papers. Then a third letter arrived for the three inmates, which had heroin, added Carey.

The mails were found to be delivered by 40-year-old Sharrieff Rahseem De'Johnette of Williamsburg. De'Johnette teaches history at a college in Hampton University. He has been suspended without pay from the college he used to teach.

Authorities have charged De'Johnette with conspiracy, marijuana and heroin distribution and delivering drugs to jail inmates. While the three Newport inmates face conspiracy and drug possession charges. One amongst them has also been slapped with a drug delivery charge.
